What usually goes wrong
- Not knowing which sections matter. The AFQT determines eligibility; line scores determine which jobs are open. A candidate targeting a technical rating and one targeting a general enlistment should not study the same way, and most do.
- Speed, not knowledge. Much of the ASVAB is arithmetic a student can already do, under a clock that punishes hesitation.
- Arithmetic Reasoning word problems, where translating English into an equation is the whole difficulty.
- Word Knowledge with no strategy beyond hoping the word is familiar.
- Mechanical Comprehension, which rewards physical intuition many candidates have never been taught to build.
- Studying everything equally instead of the sections the target career path actually scores.

- Arithmetic Reasoning (AFQT) — word problems, ratio and proportion, rate/time/distance, mixtures, work, percentages, probability and statistics.
- Mathematics Knowledge (AFQT) — algebra, geometry, exponents, factoring, equations.
- Word Knowledge (AFQT) — synonyms, antonyms, connotation and nuance.
- Paragraph Comprehension (AFQT) — locating details, inference, implication.
- General Science — biology, chemistry, earth science, astronomy, states of matter, the periodic table.
- Mechanical Comprehension — mechanical advantage, levers, pulleys, gears, hydraulics, torque, fluid behavior, engine basics.
- Electronics Information — circuits, Ohm's law and power, capacitors and inductors, diodes and semiconductors, fuses and breakers.
- Auto & Shop Information — engine systems, cooling and lubrication, drive train, braking and suspension, fuel and emissions, tools, fasteners, materials.
- Assembling Objects — shape combination, connection and peg-and-notch matching, jigsaw fit, rotation versus mirroring, spatial orientation.
How I teach the ASVAB
Know where you stand before building a plan. If you already know which sections are hurting you, we start there. If you do not, we find out first — that is what a diagnostic is for, and it is a tool rather than a required first step. Either way the plan gets built around where you actually are and what your target career path scores. Time spent on a section your rating does not use is time taken from one it does.
The AFQT gets protected first. It determines whether you can enlist at all. Line-score optimization is the second conversation, not the first.
Timing is practiced, not just content. Knowing how to do a problem and doing it inside the clock are separate skills, and the second one needs rehearsal.
Answer choices get taken apart, not just marked. Every practice problem carries a worked solution and a breakdown of why each wrong option is wrong, so you can check yourself between sessions. In session we produce that reasoning out loud before looking at it. Recognizing a distractor is a distinct, learnable skill, and it is built by doing it rather than by reading someone else's write-up.
Mechanical and electronics concepts get built from physical intuition. These sections reward understanding how things work, which can be taught, rather than recall, which mostly cannot be taught quickly.
Who this is not a fit for
- Anyone looking for leaked or actual test questions. That is not something I will help with.
- Recruiting advice, waiver questions, or guidance on which rating to choose — talk to a recruiter. That is their job and not mine.
- Officer-track testing (OAR, ASTB) as a listed offering — ask separately.
- Anyone wanting a guaranteed score. Nobody can honestly offer that.
Common questions
How long before my test should I start?
Depends entirely on the gap between where you are and what your target requires. We can usually size that in the first session, and I would rather tell you eight weeks than sell you two.
I only need to raise my AFQT. Can we focus there?
Yes, and that is often the right call. The AFQT is Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge, Word Knowledge, and Paragraph Comprehension.
I need a specific line score for a technical rating.
Then say so at the start. Technical ratings usually weight the mathematics, general science, electronics, and mechanical sections, and the plan should reflect your target rather than a generic study guide.
Is there practice material?
Yes — a large library of problems I have written, each with a worked solution and a breakdown of why each wrong option is wrong, so you can check yourself between sessions. In session we work the reasoning out loud before looking at any of it: the point is to be able to produce it yourself on test day, not to read it.
Do you cover every section of the ASVAB?
I cover the sections listed above. I do not claim to cover every subtest, and I would rather be precise about that than sell you a completeness claim I cannot back.
