Engineering students in their first true engineering course — usually second year, and usually the first time a class assumes you can build the model yourself rather than apply a method to one you were handed.
Statics is a gateway course in the engineering curriculum. It is often the first time students are expected to build the model themselves rather than apply a method they were given.

What usually goes wrong
- The free-body diagram. Almost every wrong answer in this course is a right calculation performed on a wrong diagram.
- Two-force members, which look like a trick until you see why they have to be true.
- Method of joints versus method of sections. Students learn both and then guess between them.
- Friction problems, where "is it about to slip or is it already slipping" changes the equations entirely and is stated nowhere in the problem.
- Distributed loads, where the whole difficulty is converting a shape into a single force at the right location.
- Moments in three dimensions, where intuition quietly stops working.

How I teach Statics
Engineering mindset. My engineering background shapes how I teach Statics: the goal is not just solving equilibrium equations, but learning how engineers represent real systems before calculating anything.
Nothing gets calculated until the diagram is right. I will make you draw it, and I will ask what each arrow means. This is the single highest-return habit in the course.
Count equations against unknowns before starting. Determinate or indeterminate is a question you answer first, not something you discover after twenty minutes of algebra.
Sign conventions get fixed once and kept. Most sign errors are not carelessness — they come from silently changing conventions mid-problem.
Sanity-check the result physically. If a support reaction comes out negative, that means something specific about the world. Knowing what it means catches errors nothing else will.
Preparation is built around your course, not a stock problem set. The ASVAB is the one subject I keep a prebuilt curriculum for, because that exam has a single published blueprint that is the same for every student. University coursework is not like that — notation, sequence and what the exam emphasizes vary by instructor — so for Statics I prepare against your own material instead. Common questions
I am failing and the exam is in two weeks. Is that too late?
Usually not. Statics failures concentrate in a small number of habits, and habits change faster than content knowledge. No promises about a grade — but this is the course where targeted work most often shows up quickly.
Which textbook do you use?
Yours. Hibbeler, Beer & Johnston, and Meriam all order topics differently, and I follow your course's sequence and notation rather than my own.
Do you cover 3D statics?
Yes. It is usually where students most need the help.
Is there prepared practice material for Statics?
Not a stock problem set. The ASVAB has prebuilt packets because that exam has one fixed, published blueprint; university coursework varies too much between instructors for a generic set to be worth as much as preparation aimed at your actual course. Send the topics, the assignment or the exam coverage ahead of time when you can, and I will prepare around those before we meet.
Online or in person?
Online anywhere in the United States. In person by appointment within approximately 15 minutes of ZIP code 23462 in Virginia Beach, including Oberndorf Central Library. Statics works well online: it is a whiteboard course, and you keep the recording and the PDF.
