Chemistry Tutoring

Chemistry gets memorized far more often than it gets understood — which works until the exam asks something the rules were never stated for. The goal here is to understand why reactions behave the way they do, so the rules become consequences instead of a list.

What usually goes wrong

  • The mole. Nearly every downstream difficulty in the first semester traces back to whether unit conversion through the mole is automatic or effortful.
  • Stoichiometry with a limiting reactant, where the arithmetic is easy and knowing which quantity governs is not.
  • Equilibrium and Le Châtelier, taught as a rule to recite rather than a system that responds.
  • Acid–base and buffer problems, where students memorize four scenarios instead of one framework.
  • Thermochemistry sign conventions — endothermic, exothermic, system, surroundings — which are pure bookkeeping and cost enormous numbers of points.
  • Gas laws applied without checking whether the assumptions hold.

How I teach chemistry

Engineering mindset. My engineering background shapes how I approach chemistry: calculations are not isolated steps; they are models that describe what is happening at the molecular level.

Units carry the reasoning. Dimensional analysis is not a formatting requirement — it is the method. If the units resolve, the setup is usually right, and this single habit fixes more chemistry than any other.

Draw the particles. Concentration, equilibrium, and gas behavior all become concrete when you sketch what is in the container. Students who picture it stop guessing.

One framework, not many special cases. Acid–base problems are the clearest example: a weak acid, a buffer, and a titration midpoint are the same equilibrium under different conditions, and teaching them as one thing is far more durable than teaching four.

Balance and check before calculating. An unbalanced equation makes every subsequent number wrong, and it is a ten-second check.

Estimate first. Knowing an answer should be "a bit less than 1 mole" catches calculator and conversion errors immediately.

Who this is not a fit for

  • Organic chemistry — a genuinely different course with a different skill set, and not one I offer.
  • Biochemistry, analytical, physical, or inorganic chemistry beyond general chemistry.
  • Laboratory technique instruction. This is problem-solving and concept tutoring, delivered at a whiteboard.
  • Lab reports produced as a deliverable.
  • Chemistry research or graduate coursework.

Common questions

Do you tutor organic chemistry?

No. Organic is a genuinely different course, and it is not on my subject list. I would rather point you elsewhere than take it.

Do you tutor AP Chemistry and General Chemistry?

Yes. I tutor General, Honors, and AP Chemistry, following your course sequence and textbook.

Is my problem chemistry or math?

Often math — unit conversion, logarithms in pH, exponents in equilibrium. Because math is also a subject I tutor, we can fix the underlying gap rather than working around it.

Does chemistry work online?

Yes, for problem-solving and concepts. Lab work does not, and I do not claim it does.
